Hi I’m Helanie. When I started studying physiotherapy I was really surprised by what it entailed, the complexity of the field and the capability of the qualified practitioners I had the privilege of working with. I was even more surprised to learn that physio's actually work in hospital, specifically in ICU and not just on the sport field or treating joint aches and pains.
During my studies I developed a passion for the cardio-pulmonary field of physiotherapy. It just made sense to me. We all need to breathe right?
As I continued my early career my interest in the field grew and I started tailoring my post graduate courses to this particular field.
I have since completed my Masters in Physiotherapy with my thesis topic being:
Physical function, muscle function, exercise tolerance and health related quality of live outcomes in critical illness survivors.
I've had the privilege of attending the Critical Care National Congress in August of 2019 where I also presented an abstract.
In 2020 I spent the year working in a COVID-19 field hospital in Cape Town. I was subsequently asked to speak at two conferences, as part of an interdisciplinary team, namely the GP Refresher Conference: "Post Covid Rehabilitation and Interdisciplinary Care Opportunities 2021 and Towards Unity for Health Conference 2021."
